Our Top Picks for January

Special Offer

Kalahari Desert - Botswana

Kalahari Desert - Botswana

SeasonHigh Summer Average Temperature for January 28 Celsius 82 Fahrenheit

What

Excellent birding, game viewing and the zebra migration in the now-green Kalahari Desert.

Why

January falls within Botswana’s intense rainy season, making animals hard to find in the northern parts of the country like Chobe National Park. The Kalahari is in the south, however, and being a desert, doesn’t receive the same level of rain. But what rain it does receive transforms it from red sand to green grazing, attracting predators, prey and plenty of migrant and resident birds.

Zebra migration through Nxai and Makgadikgadi Pans.

When to book

The Kalahari is not nearly as visited as Botswana’s superstar wilderness areas, the Okavango Delta and Chobe. You should be able to get good accommodation and rates without booking too far in advance.

Zanzibar - Tanzania

Zanzibar - Tanzania

SeasonHigh Summer Average Temperature for January 27 Celsius 80 Fahrenheit

What

Diving off Zanzibar.

Why

Zanzibar is an island off the Indian Coast of Tanzania and averages only five rainy days for the month of January. The south of the main island offers the best diving conditions while the north has the best sunset views. For exceptional reef diving and snorkeling, head to the exclusive outlying islands of Pemba, Mafia and Mnemba. Zanzibar is also home to Stone Town, a World Heritage Site with plenty to see and do. A beach holiday on Zanzibar is the perfect way to relax after the early morning wake-up calls of a Southern Serengeti safari.

When to book

Because the island has almost perfect weather, it is very popular so secure the best accommodation as soon as you can. Sought-after places like Pemba and Mafia have a very amount of accommodation available – there are no large resorts here.

SeasonHigh Summer Average Temperature for January 20 Celsius 68 Fahrenheit

What

Self-drive road trip or private guided tour of Cape Town, the surrounding Cape Winelands and the Garden Route that runs from Cape Town and takes you to Addo Elephant National Park.

Why

Unlike the safari areas in the northern parts of South Africa – the Kruger National Park, Madikwe Private Game Reserve and Phinda Private Game Reserve - that are rainy in January, Cape Town and the Garden Route are dry.

When to book

For the first half of January and especially over New Year, as far in advance as possible. This time coincides with the South African school holidays so many local families take their annual vacation now. The local schools reopen in mid-January meaning the second-half of the month is slightly less busy.

Southern Serengeti - Tanzania

Southern Serengeti - Tanzania

SeasonHigh Summer Average Temperature for January 17 Celsius 63 Fahrenheit

What

Calving season during the Great Wildebeest Migration.

Why

The herds mass in the Southern Serengeti at this time of year to take advantage of the excellent grazing – depending on whether good rains fell in time – that will sustain their calves. About 8  000 calves are born every day and there is plenty of predator action from lions, hyenas, leopards, wild dogs and jackals. Game drives will take you to the heart of the action.

When to book

This is considered the low or Green Season in Serengeti National Park and is much less-visited than the mid-year high season. You generally don’t need to book too far in advance to get accommodation. Bear in mind that the time around New Year will be busier as local Tanzanian families go on holiday.

Cape Town - South Africa

SeasonAutumn Average Temperature for April 22 Celsius 71 Fahrenheit

What

Wine tasting in Franschhoek or Constantia, visiting the African penguins at Boulders Beach, climbing the lighthouse at Cape Point and taking the cable car to the top of Table Mountain. And be sure to rent a car (or get us to hire a reputable private guide for you) so you can venture further afield to the Winelands.

Why

April heralds classic autumn weather in South Africa’s oldest and most beautiful city. The heat and south-easterly winds of summer have passed, and the chilly drizzle of winter is yet to set in, making this month almost perfect in terms of the weather.

When to book

Like so much of travelling to Africa in April, much depends on when Easter and the South African school holidays fall. Cape Town is extremely popular with local travellers and the city hosts plenty world-class festivals and events that ensure hotels fill up quickly. If you can’t book well in advance, then try to avoid the Easter break – in South Africa, this is a 4-day period that includes two public holidays.

kwaZulu-Natal - South Africa

kwaZulu-Natal - South Africa

SeasonAutumn Average Temperature for May 23 Celsius 73 Fahrenheit

What

A ‘bush, beach, berg and battlefields’ self-drive road trip.

Why

kwaZulu-Natal is one of South Africa’s smallest provinces but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for with an absorbing mix of big game safaris in private reserves and national parks, sandy sub-tropical beaches, the impressive Drakensberg mountain range for hiking and an array of famous historical landmarks including significant battlefields and the site where Nelson Mandela was ultimately captured by the police.

When to book

May is a great month to visit KZN because the South African school holidays are over. Book as soon as you want to go because game viewing in places like Phinda Private Game Reserve and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi National Park is starting to ramp up with the onset of the cooler, drier weather.

Eastern Cape - South Africa

Eastern Cape - South Africa

SeasonAutumn Average Temperature for May 17 Celsius 62 Fahrenheit

What

Spot the ‘Big 7’ at Addo Elephant National Park. In addition to the classic Big 5 – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino – the third-largest national park in the country has a protected marine section where you can see great white sharks and southern right whales, in season.

Why

The Eastern Cape province is a great place to end a Garden Route self-drive or go on a ‘beginner’s safari’. The climate is temperate and the whole area is malaria-free – ideal if you’re travelling with young children or older travellers.

When to book

May is a sweet spot – peak safari season is just starting, heralding cooler and drier weather. Okavango Delta - Botswana

Okavango Delta - Botswana

SeasonAutumn Average Temperature for May 21 Celsius 69 Fahrenheit

What

A water-based safari in the world’s biggest inland delta.

Why

Although the rainy season has largely passed by May, the Okavango Delta is slowly filling up with all the water that has fallen in the past few months, much of it trickling down from the Angolan highlands. As the rest of the country starts drying up, the Delta’s surging waters start plenty of game who will pass winter here, with ample water supply. The higher water levels also mean you can enjoy mokoro (traditional dug-out canoe) rides and spells on high-speed motor boats.

Superb gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda and Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.

Why

This dry spell makes trekking much easier as there is less heavy-going mud. More sunlight also penetrates the forest canopy, making it lighter for photographers hoping to snap the ultimate gorilla shot.

When to book

This is peak season for gorilla trekking and there are limited permits and lodges available. Consider booking your gorilla trek up to a year in advance – this also gives you plenty of time to get fit!

Numbers are limited on walking safaris and lodges are generally small and intimate throughout South Luangwa, indeed throughout Zambia. Chat to us as soon as you’re interested in undertaking a walking safari so we can ensure a seamless itinerary for you.

Cape Winelands & Whale Coast - South Africaa

Cape Winelands & Whale Coast - South Africa

SeasonWinter Average Temperature for August 13 Celsius 55 Fahrenheit

What

Wine tasting in cosy cellars (South Africa has superb vintages), dining on excellent cuisine and going out on the Atlantic Ocean to enjoy watching southern right whales feed, mate and play.

Why

By August, big pods of southern right whales have generally swum up on their annual migration from the Antarctic to take advance of the impending spring in the relatively warmer waters of the Atlantic. Hermanus – less than a two-hour very scenic drive from Cape Town – the world capital for whale watching, these massive mammals often seen in the town’s Walker Bay. Elsewhere, the Cape Winelands – also only an hour’s drive from Cape Town – are lending themselves to idyllic winter days.

When to book

Whale-watching season usually peaks in August and visitors flock to Hermanus, especially on weekends. Book as far in advance as you can to secure the best accommodation. The good news is that Cape Town and the Winelands are fairly quiet at this time of year – perfect for a last-minute holiday.

Sossusvlei, Damaraland & the Kaokaveld - Namibia

Sossusvlei, Damaraland & the Kaokaveld - Namibia

SeasonWinter Average Temperature for August 21 Celsius 69 Fahrenheit

What

Road tripping with your family or friends through some of the most ancient and beguiling landscapes in the world.

Why

Namibia has an excellent road network and a very low population – only about two million people live in the whole country! This means low traffic numbers and, in August, the Namibian and South African school holidays are over, meaning you’ll have plenty of space to yourself.

When to book

Although there isn’t a large number of visitors from neighbouring South Africa, it is still peak safari season and remote places like Damaraland and the Kaokoveld have limited upscale accommodation available. Try to arrange your Namibian adventure about six months in advance so you have your first choice of lodge as well as of vehicle.

Selous Game Reserve - Tanzania

What

Spectacular peak-season game viewing without the crowds.

Why

The Selous is a massive reserve and at this time of year, the safari crowd is hanging out in the Serengeti and Masai Mara, taking the Wildebeest Migration. This means you have the best of both worlds: fantastic sightings with much of the reserve to yourself.

When to book

Since it’s peak season, don’t leave it too late to get in touch with your Africa Safari Expert. We like to have your safari lined up at least three months before your departure date.

Grand Baie - Mauritius

Grand Baie - Mauritius

SeasonSpring Average Temperature for September 27 Celsius 81 Fahrenheit

What

Days on the beach enjoying all sorts of water sports, shopping in fun boutiques, hearing about your children’s days at professional kids’ clubs and dancing the night away to traditional sega music.

Why

Grand Baie is the liveliest part of Mauritius and great for couples and families who like to have plenty to see and do – it combines very easily with a Big 5 safari to the Kruger National Park, Phinda Private Game Reserve or Madikwe Game Reserve, all in south Africa. September is generally one of the driest months on the island, allowing you to stock up on sunshine before heading back to a northern hemisphere that’s heading for winter.

When to book

Since Mauritius is a popular honeymoon destination and an easy add-on to so many peak-season safari destinations, don’t leave it too much to the last minute to make your booking.

Masai Mara National Reserve - Kenya

SeasonSpring Average Temperature for September 20 Celsius 68 Fahrenheit

What

Encountering mega-herds of wildebeest grazing on the Mara’s lush and plentiful grasses.

Why

With the drama of the river crossings now largely over, the wildebeest must replenish their energy, especially the females that are pregnant. The Mara’s significant collection of big cats – particularly lions and leopards – lie in wait, hoping for easy pickings.

When to book

September is still considered peak season so it’s best to get your enquiry in at least six months in advance to have the first choice of accommodation.

Ruaha & Katavi National Parks - Tanzania

SeasonSpring Average Temperature for September 22 Celsius 71 Fahrenheit

What

Superb game viewing and birding in Tanzania’s less well-known national parks.

Why

They may not be as famous as the Serengeti and certainly don’t have millions of wildebeest hurtling through for several months a year but Katavi and Ruaha have rustic charm in spades. Both are home to all the big cats, wild dogs, massive herds of buffalo and elephant, and at least 500 bird species.

When to book

Our Top Safaris for October

Whether you are planning to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration in East Africa, experience a Big 5 safari in the Kruger National Park or spend your honeymoon in the Seychelles, timing is important. Our guidelines are based on our expert, on-the-ground knowledge of Africa’s travel seasons.

Etosha National Park - Namibia

Etosha National Park - Namibia

SeasonSpring Average Temperature for October 25 Celsius 77 Fahrenheit

What

So many species gathered around one waterhole that you don’t know where to start looking!

Why

Etosha is a largely arid landscape, dominated by brilliant-white Etosha Pan at the centre. By October, after a long, dry winter, smaller water sources have long dried up, leaving only bigger ones and, in camps, pumped water. It’s not unusual to see large numbers of impala, giraffes, warthogs, rhino and elephants call drinking from the same waterhole.

When to book

October is still high season although availability isn’t as under pressure because it is not regional school holidays.

Lower Zambezi National Park - Zambia

Lower Zambezi National Park - Zambia

SeasonSpring Average Temperature for October 25 Celsius 76 Fahrenheit

What

Classic 4x4 game drives or guided nature walks in the morning; superb boating and canoe safaris in the afternoon.

Why

The Lower Zambezi is blessed by being bordered by the Zambezi River. Unlike the country’s Luangwa River, the Zambezi is easy going, calm and predictable, meaning you can enjoy all sorts of activities on it as the mercury soars. Canoeing with a guide down one of its channels promises a wildlife extravaganza of elephants, water monitors, vervet monkeys and plenty of colourful birds.

When to book

Zambia’s charm is that it is still relatively ‘undiscovered’ so can usually accommodate spontaneous travellers who find they can travel at the last minute or who simply must scratch the safari bug more or less immediately.

Linyanti, Savute & Chobe - Botswana

Linyanti, Savute & Chobe - Botswana

SeasonSpring Average Temperature for October 27 Celsius 80 Fahrenheit

What

Botswana, always a sensational game-viewing destination, ramps up the spectacle with unbelievable sightings.

Why

October is one of the hottest (despite not being summer yet) and driest months in Botswana. After a long, dry winter, both water sources and grazing can be scarce so animals don’t venture far from waterholes. This makes them easy to find, for you – and Botswana’s teeming populations of lion, wild dog, hyena, cheetah and leopard. If you can handle the heat (many lodges have swimming pools and air conditioning), then October promises high-octane game viewing.

When to book

Because the game viewing is so good, Botswana in October can be surprisingly busy, despite the heat and areas like Chobe National Park are always popular because of their substantial elephant populations. Definitely don’t leave this until the last minute – chat to your Africa Safari Expert several months in advance to ensure a seamless itinerary.

Odzala National Park - Congo

Odzala National Park - Congo

SeasonSpring Average Temperature for October 23 Celsius 74 Fahrenheit

What

Among the easiest gorilla trekking on the planet.

Why

Congo is home to a significant population of lowland gorillas, meaning you don’t have to trek up mountains at altitude to see them like you do mountain gorillas. And Congo also offers astonishing birding and boating activities to see shy forest elephants, plenty of primates and unusual antelope like bongo.

When to book

Give yourself enough time to get fit. Even though the terrain is fairly flat and not at altitude, the heat and humidity can be high. Also, you may have to walk for several hours to find the gorillas, depending on their overnight movements. Accommodation and flights are also limited so don’t leave this until the last minute of seeing the gorillas is on your bucket list.

Samburu National Reserve - Kenya

Samburu National Reserve - Kenya

SeasonSpring Average Temperature for October 28 Celsius 82 Fahrenheit

What

Rocky outcrops that are home to klipspringers and rock hyrax surrounded by green plains that are one of the best places to see gerenuk, the adorable antelope with an unusually long neck that can stand unaided on its hind legs for minutes at a time to feed.

Why

Lying in the north of Kenya, Samburu is one another of those fantastic safari gems that may not be as famous as the Masai Mara but is as rewarding in its own way. The lodges here are often extraordinary: many are built into the rocky hills and boulders that are so characteristic of Samburu.

When to book

Since it’s more an off-the-beaten-track destination, Samburu is ideal for last-minuters or those who can’t book safaris too far in advance.

Our Top Safaris for November

Whether you are planning to witness the Great Wildebeest Migration in East Africa, experience a Big 5 safari in the Kruger National Park or spend your honeymoon in the Seychelles, timing is important. Our guidelines are based on our expert, on-the-ground knowledge of Africa’s travel seasons.

Cape Town & Kruger National Park - South Africa

Cape Town & Kruger National Park - South Africa

SeasonSummer Average Temperature for November 25 Celsius 77 Fahrenheit

What

In Cape Town, everything from wine tasting, making friends with African penguins, visiting Cape Point, sampling great wine, climbing Table Mountain and shopping up a storm to eating at exciting restaurants and visiting moving heritage sites. In Kruger, getting your camera ready for Green Season Big 5 action!

Why

These are South Africa’s most popular destinations and they are chockful in December and January (they’re also much hotter). November gives you good weather, all the sights and off-season rates without the crowds. What’s not to love?

When to book

If you were travelling in December, we’d say anything from six months to a year in advance. But November is more forgiving so get in touch as soon as you know you can travel to see what your Africa Safari Expert can do for you.

Zanzibar Archipelago - Tanzania

Zanzibar Archipelago - Tanzania

SeasonSummer Average Temperature for November 26 Celsius 79 Fahrenheit

What

A post-safari bliss out on some of the Indian Ocean’s most beautiful islands coupled with exploring historic Stone Town for gifts and mementos. The truly adventurous can snorkel and dive with colossal whale sharks, which generally arrive off the coast in about November.

Why

Safaris have a lot of early mornings, late nights and bumpy roads, making them exhilarating but often tiring, too. A few days on an idyllic island like Thanda, Pemba or no-expense-spared Mnemba will help you arrive home truly recharged. Zanzibar gets only on average nine rainy days this month and the underwater visibility for divers is at its best.

When to book

If you specifically want to dive with whale sharks, we’d recommend securing your beach lodge as early as possible. If you’re just keen on ‘shopping and flopping (onto a sun lounger)’ then you can leave it a little later although Zanzibar is a popular honeymoon destination.

Southern Serengeti - Tanzania

Southern Serengeti - Tanzania

SeasonSummer Average Temperature for November 22 Celsius 72 Fahrenheit

What

Wildebeest on the move as they migrate away from the Masai Mara in Kenya down to their birthing and feed grounds in the Southern Serengeti. And, according to the ancient laws of nature, where there are wildebeest en masse, you are sure to find lions, leopards, wild dogs, spotted hyenas and cheetahs (the Seronera Valley is thought to have the highest concentration of cheetahs in the world). In addition to countless bellowing wildebeest, many non-predator species start dropping their babies from about now.

Why

The Wildebeest Migration is controlled by rainfall. By November the ‘short rains’ have generally arrived in the region to rejuvenate depleted grazing and water sources. This is the start of the Green Season and coincides with more availability and lower rates. Don’t be put off by the mention of rain – showers are generally short and occur in the afternoon.

When to book

Another bonus about Green Season is that you don’t need to plan up to a year ahead, unlike peak season. Chat to your Africa Safari Expert when you and your family decide you’d like to discover the Southern Serengeti in November.

Kalahari Desert - Botswana

SeasonSummer Average Temperature for December 26 Celsius 79 Fahrenheit

What

The sight of thousands of zebra arriving to feast on the fresh grass as well as hundreds of wobbly newborn springbok, impala, wildebeest and buffalo. Naturally, predators are always around to pick off the proverbial runts of the litter. Photographers and birders have a field day.

Why

Yes, the Kalahari is a desert but the Green Season rains temporary transform it into a veritable Garden of Eden. Waterholes are full and grazing is lush. Coupled with low visitor numbers, you may feel like you have a paradise all to yourself.

When to book

Green Season is always less busy than peak season so you needn’t plan too far in advance. Mahale Mountains - Tanzania

Mahale Mountains - Tanzania

SeasonSummer Average Temperature for December 20 Celsius 68 Fahrenheit

What

Trekking habituated chimpanzee families in the Mahale rainforest. Chimps are highly endangered because of poaching and habitat destruction but, like gorillas in central Africa, responsible travel is helping to save these extraordinary primates.

Why

The earlier rains bring allow the chimps’ favourite fruits, seeds and nuts to grow, bringing them down from the treetops to forage. Chimp trekking is both fun and memorable as they tend to be very active and expressive.

When to book

Both accommodation and trekking permits are very limited in the Mahale region so don’t leave this one until the last minute. You also need to give yourself a few months to get ‘walking fit’ – the chimps can move quickly and you’ll need to keep pace in dense rainforest at high temperatures and humidity. You’re chances of seeing them are not unlimited so you don’t want to waste your visit by not being able to keep up.
